Sony ECM-W5 Two-Person Wireless Microphone System

Designed primarily for Sony cameras equipped with a compatible Multi Interface (MI) Shoe featuring a digital audio interface, the Sony ECM-W5 is a versatile two-person wireless microphone system for interviews, video production, live streaming, and content creation. Its receiver connects directly to the camera's MI Shoe, enabling cable-free digital audio transmission while drawing power from the camera. With compatible cameras, the system can record 32-bit float audio directly into the video file, simplifying post-production and eliminating the need to manage separate audio recordings.

The system includes two microphone transmitters, a receiver, a charging case, and a USB-C adapter. Additional features include onboard backup recording, wireless headphone monitoring, and timecode synchronization. Beyond compatible Sony cameras, the ECM-W5 can also connect to supported computers, smartphones, and cameras without an MI Shoe, offering flexibility across different recording setups.

Digital Audio Integration with Sony Cameras

When connected through a compatible Sony camera's MI Shoe, the ECM-W5 supports digital audio recording at up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float. Supported cameras can record 32-bit float audio directly as an audio track within the video file, reducing the need to handle and synchronize separate audio files.

The expanded dynamic range of 32-bit float recording allows quieter voices and sudden volume peaks to be adjusted during post-production, helping recover audio details and reducing the need for constant gain adjustments while recording.

Automatic input gain adjustment helps prevent clipping and distortion, while manual gain control offers settings from -12 to +12 dB, including during 32-bit float recording. Switchable noise-cut and low-cut functions provide additional control over unwanted noise and low-frequency sounds.

Reliable Wireless Transmission and Flexible Monitoring

The ECM-W5 delivers low-latency wireless audio transmission over distances of up to approximately 1,640' under line-of-sight conditions. Its optimized wireless design incorporates Bluetooth hopping technology to help maintain a stable connection and minimize dropouts, even in environments with substantial radio interference.

For convenient, cable-free monitoring, the receiver can connect to compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones. It can also capture audio from the microphone on compatible Sony wireless headphones, providing an alternative for lightweight vlogging and mobile content creation. With a compatible microphone, binaural recording adds a sense of spatial depth to captured ambient sound.

Built-In Recording and Backup Options

Each microphone transmitter features 64GB of internal storage for standalone recording and backup audio capture. This allows you to preserve recordings independently of the wireless transmission, providing an additional safeguard during important interviews, productions, and live content sessions.

Compatible Sony cameras also support simultaneous WAV recording, allowing a 32-bit float audio source to be retained separately from the video file. Internal recordings can be transferred to a computer through USB-C, either by connecting the microphone directly or by using the charging case.

For productions involving more than two speakers, the system can accommodate up to two additional ECM-W5T transmitters, available separately. With a compatible camera, this configuration supports recording four speakers simultaneously on separate audio tracks. Recording start and stop controls on the microphones add convenience when managing interviews and other multi-person productions.

External Microphone Inputs and Flexible Mounting

Both the transmitter and receiver feature a mono 3.5mm external microphone input, allowing compatible lavalier microphones, such as the optional Sony ECM-L1, to be connected. The transmitter's locking TRS connector helps prevent accidental cable disconnection during recording.

Clip and magnetic attachment options provide flexibility when positioning the microphones on clothing or suitable surfaces. Their discreet design is suitable for on-camera use, while the upright form factor also makes them practical to hold for handheld reporting and live streaming.

For setups that do not use a compatible Sony camera, the microphones and receiver can connect to supported smartphones and computers. The included USB-C adapter allows the receiver to connect directly to devices that support USB Audio Class 2.0, including compatible workflows using 32-bit float recording.

Timecode Synchronization and Intuitive Controls

Timecode output helps align audio and video during post-production, making the ECM-W5 useful for multi-camera workflows. In USB SYNC mode, connecting the receiver to a compatible Sony camera through USB-C enables synchronization with timecode stored as video metadata.

The charging case simplifies operation: opening the case places the receiver in standby, while removing the units powers them on for use. The receiver features a high-contrast AMOLED touchscreen and a control wheel with a button for adjusting settings and managing system functions.

When configured in advance, camera-linked power through the MI Shoe allows the receiver and microphones to power on in coordination with the compatible camera, helping streamline the start of a recording session.

Extended Battery Life and Status Indicators

When mounted on a compatible Sony camera, the receiver draws power through the MI Shoe, making it convenient for extended recording sessions. The microphones and the standalone receiver each provide up to seven hours of continuous operation on a full charge. When the receiver is powered by the camera, charging the microphones through the case can extend total operating time to up to 11 hours.

LED indicators display power, recording, and wireless connection status, helping you monitor the system while working. The ECM-W5 also incorporates recycled materials, with recycled content accounting for more than 41% of the main unit's plastic weight.
